Direct Service Opportunities

Direct Service volunteer positions are the roles you would most readily envision when thinking about working with street youth. These are the volunteers who cultivate relationships with the youth, who have conversations with them in the drop-in center or on the streets, and who are with the youth in times of crisis and transition. Because we believe that knowing these youth is an honor, only those volunteers who are thoroughly screened and have participated in our training are eligible to serve in direct service roles.

Outreach Volunteer
Outreach Volunteers make a large commitment of time and energy to work directly with the youth. For one year, they work one night per week or a combination of four shifts per month. These shifts last about five hours and include going on outreach, setting up and supervising drop-in times, and cleaning up the drop-in center at the close of each evening. Outreach Volunteers also attend a weekly staff meeting on Thursday evenings and participate in follow-up activities with the youth. The weekly meeting is 1.5 hours, and we estimate follow-up activities at three hours per week. Follow-up with youth may include activities such as jail and hospital visitation, taking the youth to church, making referrals on case management issues, or getting together for coffee or a movie.

Before joining New Horizons, potential volunteers must fill out an application, agree to a Washington State Patrol background check, attend our 20-hour training, and go through an interview process.

Outreach Volunteers are Christians whose lives demonstrate a commitment to Jesus Christ. They are nonjudgmental and able to work with Christians of differing denominations. Volunteers must be 21 years of age or older, mature, responsible, and capable of exercising sound judgment. They are emotionally stable and able to cope with crisis situations, and they must possess the willingness and ability to accept responsibility, fulfill commitments, follow directions of the ministry leaders, and adhere to the policies and operation procedures of New Horizons.

Self-Care Center Volunteer
Self-Care Center Volunteers work two shifts (mornings or evenings) each month, maintaining and running the hygiene section of our drop-in center. This includes monitoring the clothing room, laundry area, and showers, and distributing hygiene items. Self-Care Volunteers attend a monthly meeting and make a one-year commitment. They are encouraged to form relationships with the youth and to participate in follow-up activities with the youth’s primary staff person. Self-Care Volunteers are also encouraged to occasionally accompany other staff on outreach. Potential volunteers must fill out an application, agree to a Washington State Patrol background check, attend our 20-hour training, and participate in an interview process.

Late Night Outreach (LNO) Volunteers make a large commitment of time and energy to work directly with young women in prostitution. For one year, they work three Friday nights per month. These shifts last about five hours and include prayer, going on outreach, doing paperwork, and setting up and supervising the outreach table. LNO Volunteers also attend our all-staff meeting on the first Thursday evening of the month, as well as a LNO Meeting once a month. Volunteers are also expected to participate in follow-up activities with the women. Follow-up with the women may include activities such as jail and hospital visitation, taking a woman to church, making referrals on case management issues, or getting together for coffee.

Urban Ministry Interns (UMI)
Each year, New Horizons offers one intern position to a college graduate. The UMI position is a one-year program in which interns gain valuable experience working in a ministry setting with street youth. UMIs must raise their own financial support for the duration of the internship.

The interns interact with our clients as they help staff in a variety of settings. Each intern participates in drop-in, outreach, and afternoon programming. Interns receive education through staff training, reading groups, case consultation, and in-services.

Individuals applying for this position should be college graduates and mature Christians with a desire to work with street youth. They must have a support network from which they can solicit prayer and financial support. New Horizons begins interviewing for this position in the Spring of each year.
