I have worked directly with youth for many years in several different areas and I believe that I have a good understanding of problems that youth face. The intensity of these issues are multiplied by the unique background of the youth NHM serves. As a board member I know my level of contact with these kids will be limited. That does not hinder my desire to contribute to the growth, planning, and implementation of programs that will bring greater continuity to the continuum of care we want to offer these kids.
Nate Van Duzer
Seattle City Council – Legislative Assistant
Growing up in Seattle, I have been exposed to the ministry story of New Horizons over the years through connections large and small. Intentional relationships transform lives; New Horizons has been an active witness to this truth over the last three decades. I feel privileged to be a part of the New Horizons community in its current chapter and humbled by the opportunity to serve our city's youth. I fully expect God to use the relationships formed through this work to continue to shape and transform my own life and the lives of those around me.

Controller/Chief of Information Systems – JLR Engineering Systems Co.
As a Board Member during the early years of New Horizons Ministries and then rejoining the Board in 2002, I have seen NHM grow in size and professionalism, but has done so without losing focus or straying from the mission. New Horizons is truly a place of Christ’s love, not only for the youth, but among the staff and volunteers as well. The commitment of the people at NHM is truly inspirational. I see what we do at NHM as walking humbly in God’s love, speaking to the face of Christ in each youth, and calling them to what he has created them to be. We do that by loving them just as they are, where they are, and making that love tangible. When we do this, the youth we serve are blessed, and we are blessed in return. New Horizons Ministries is very good at what it does, and I am honored to be a part of it.
 Susan Jouflas, MSW
Physician’s Assistant
I have been committed to serving and praying for homeless youth since the early 1980’s. I volunteered at NHM from 1982-84 working as an outreach volunteer, and later served as core staff for several years while pursuing my Master’s Degree in Social Work at the University of Washington.
It is a blessing to bring the gifts of prayer and healing to NHM. I love the fact that this ministry is committed to bringing the real and loving presence of Christ to homeless kids who are suffering. My passion is to serve the lost and disenfranchised in our society. My energies are directed towards serving this population as well as the international community through medical and provisional food programs. The spare time I have away from my current position as a Physician’s Assistant is typically spent working at overseas clinics in troubled areas. I attend Sacred Heart Parish in Enumclaw and am married with 4 sons.

My first introduction to New Horizons was in the fall of 1999 when my wife and I performed at the Dessert Extravaganza. We were recent graduates of the University of Washington and our hearts were heavy every time we visited the Ave and saw all of the homeless and disenfranchised youth. At the dessert, we were so encouraged to learn that, in one way or another, there were hundreds of people loving and
serving these kids in the way of Jesus. We became donors that night and later became self-care volunteers. Over the last 7 years of volunteer staff membership, I was also a part of the first Ministry of Reconciliation Committee. My wife and I have taken an intermission from direct service since our son was born, but I am excited and honored to continue journeying with New Horizons as a member of the board.
 Pam Longston, Board President
In the mid 90’s my husband and I were invited to serve dinner at NHM to a group of homeless and street involved youth at NHM on Capitol Hill by a member of our congregation. It was clear to us that first night that these young people could use all the advocates that they could get. Since then we’ve supported the ministry in a variety of ways. Most recently, in 2008 I led the NHM Supportive Community Housing Team, and I’m currently serving as Board of Directors President for NHM and Street Bean Espresso. We worship at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church and serve on the youth ministry team.
What keeps us involved and committed to the ministry is the continium of care that we offer homeless and street involved youth, and the relationships that we’ve built with the New Horizons and Street Bean staff, volunteers, donors, supporters and customers.

Director, Product Engineering – Kaseya
I first became aware of New Horizons in the mid-90’s when our church volunteered as a Food Group to prepare and serve meals to the homeless and street involved youth. This experience touched me and left an indelible mark on my heart. As a result, I’ve supported NHM over the years. While beginning a new season of life, the Lord led me to a more active role at NHM. Subsequently, I was invited to join the Board. It is a blessing and a privilege to serve in this ministry alongside the incredible staff and all of the amazing volunteers who serve the youth in the name of Jesus.

The Boeing Company – Human Resources Generalist
I was introduced to New Horizons Ministries almost five years ago when I was asked to volunteer as a Human Resources expert. It was clear immediately that this was an organization who shared my passion for spreading love to kids who had not seen many examples of it in their lives. I continued to volunteer as a Human Resource expert and in 2011 decided to increase my commitment by joining the board.

Our family joined the New Horizons’ family of volunteers over 20 years ago - since holding this work of loving service, mercy and grace close to our hearts. New Horizons has been integral to our lives not only because this mission provides much needed assistance to Seattle’s homeless, street-involved young people but because all people of New Horizons are genuine, passionate, committed and giving – and their love for young people is unquestioned and unconditional. Their/our call by God to serve and love in the way of Jesus Christ has always been clear, intentional and enduring. It is good to be a part of this family.
