Behind the Scenes

We’re able to be present with our youth, because so many people help behind the scenes to make New Horizons Ministries efficient, clean, welcoming, and stable. The following vital positions allow New Horizons to be a healing presence on Seattle’s streets:

Board of Directors
Church Advocate
In-Kind Supporter
Office or Support Volunteer
Prayer Support
Item Drive
Food Group

For information about any of the volunteer opportunities described below, please send an email to Volunteer@nhmin.org or call our Volunteer Resources Coordinator at 206-374-0866 ext. 107.

Board of Directors
The Board of Directors for New Horizons Ministries is an active, working board. Members of the board commit to a minimum of one year of service, with a monthly commitment of 8-10 hours. These hours include attendance at a monthly board meeting as well as a board committee meeting. Board committees include Development, Governing, and Membership Planning.

Board members are Christians whose lives demonstrate a commitment to Jesus Christ. Their faith is Biblically-based, and they are able to work with Christians of differing denominations. They possess the willingness, abilities, and time to accept the responsibilities and commitments associated with board membership.

Church Advocate
A Church Advocate serves as the connection between his or her church and New Horizons Ministries. This role creates an efficient way to exchange information between two organizations, and it is a good way to explore further partnerships. The average time commitment is six hours per month, with a six-month commitment. A quarterly meeting with your supervisor and other Liaisons is required, and attendance at our training is strongly recommended

In-Kind Supporter
In-kind donations provide the essential items that our youth need. We often highlight our current needs in our newsletter, but we always welcome donations to our hygiene center, such as laundry soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, razors, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, tampons, sanitary pads, medical gloves, combs, brushes, clothing, coats and jackets, new socks and underwear, and shoes or boots. For more information about in-kind donations, please visit Ways to Give.

Office or Support Volunteer
Office volunteers perform a variety of tasks, including answering a multi-line telephone system, entering data, and helping with bulk mailings. Volunteers also help us sort and organize the donations we receive. The Office Volunteer and Support Volunteer positions both require a minimum commitment of eight hours per month for three months.

Prayer Support
Listening to God in prayer is the foundation of our ministry. Experience has taught us that growth in our agency and in the youth we serve is always preceded by faithfulness in prayer. If you would like to commit to praying for us regularly, we can send you a monthly prayer letter that highlights current prayer needs for New Horizons Ministries and for the youth. We are also in the process of establishing a more formal system for prayer volunteers—please inquire if you are interested.

Item Drive
It is a great help to us when groups organize item drives outside of our center. Our youth always need jeans, socks, coats, sweatshirts, and new underwear in all sizes. We also need donations of travel-size hygiene items. An item drive is a great way for a youth group or school to be involved in supporting the ministry of New Horizons.

Food Group
Food Group volunteers work with New Horizons and the youth by purchasing, preparing, serving, and cleaning up brerakfast or dinner for 40-75 youth during drop-in. A Food Group is a minimum of four individuals who commit to serve one night per month for a minimum of six months.
