Educating the youth: Instructor and Mentor Opportunities

New Horizons Ministries is supported by partners who realize that the plight of homeless youth demands a response. If you are unable to work in a direct-service position with the youth, serve on the Board, or be in a Food Group, you may have other skills that could benefit our youth or our agency.

In the past, we have been blessed by people who have volunteered to take youth and case managers out sailing on Lake Union, to paint the sign for our building, to host a volunteer party at their waterfront home, to create and execute creative fundraising events, or to donate time as a graphic artist.

Life Discovery Volunteer
The Life Discovery Program exists to give the youth a vision for life beyond the streets by helping them discover their natural skills and life passions; providing supportive opportunities to take risks in learning new things; and building their skill base.

A natural extension of our outreach and drop-in services, Life Discovery offers another step in our continuum of services by creating space for the young people to feel safe in self-discovery and in trying new things.  Our hope is for youth to discover an interest or skill that helps them to dream about the future, for them to experience contributing something positive to their environment and empowering them in leadership.

The Life Discovery Program is a way for volunteers and staff to build relationships in a different context. To be intentional about teaching and challenging youth to exit street life by building their natural skills and exposing their life passions. Interacting and relating in a shared activity creates opportunities for conversation to happen around interests and experiences that do not naturally come up in other settings for our youth.

Mentorship Volunteer
The mentorship program lasts for eight continuous weeks and consists of three weekly commitments: 1) Two hours of adaptive life skills workshops, including topics on Discovering Your Dreams, Nutrition, Finances, Relationships, Anger and Stress Management, Communication, and Job Search and Interviews. 2) Two hours of one-on-one mentoring with NHM staff members. 3) Two hours of “The Bridge,” a program that introduces youth to adults in the community who share about their jobs and the journey that brought them where they are. Opportunities to volunteer with our mentorship are limited to working with The Bridge. Hosting a job-site-visit, or sharing your work experiences and listening to their experiences may be a small time commitment, but can have a major impact!
