Training and Education
At New Horizons Ministries,
we believe that having a heart of compassion is a great place to
start, but we believe that it is not enough if you're going to serve the youth.
Street culture is radically different from
the culture to which most of us are accustomed, and
we can love the youth best when we take time to
learn about the issues that affect their lives. The training we
provide reflects our conviction that
these youth are precious to God and that knowing them is a privilege.
We have been conducting
training since 1982. In this time we have developed a set of
appropriate topics for training that continue to evolve,
reflecting the current challenges of street ministry. Regardless
of whether you are interested in becoming a volunteer with
New Horizons, or are simply interested in urban ministry, our training
is certain to be a valuable tool for you.

Who should attend training?
While our training is designed to equip people who want to work
with New Horizons, the training is open to anyone who would like
to know more about the lives of youth
living on the street. The training program is also used by
other service agencies throughout the city to train their volunteers
and staff.
We conduct training three times each year; the training
consists of two all-day sessions, for a total of 16 hours of training. To be
considered for a volunteer position with New Horizons, you must complete
both sessions of the training. To be
considered for a volunteer position with New Horizons, you must
complete all three sessions of the training.
Does attendance at training
commit me to service with New Horizons?
No. The training we offer is a good way to become more familiar
with New Horizons and with street culture, and it is also a good
way to begin assessing whether ministry to street youth is something
you’re interested in.
What are the dates and
times of the upcoming training?
We offer training three times each year, in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
The training consists of a total of 16 hours, split between two all day sessions.
Both sections must be completed in order to volunteer in a direct-service role.
